The Best Translucent Powders for Acne-Prone Skin (That I’ve Tried)

Best translucent powders #howdoyoutlsp #contest

After spending a good 30 minutes on your makeup, you want it to last.  You want your makeup to look (almost) as flawless as it did right after application, BUT if you get oily through the day we know that won’t happen (at least without multiple touch-ups and a crap ton of translucent powders).  My secret to flawless skin even four hours after application is a good translucent powder.

Since, I have acne-prone skin my skin is combination.  It’s oily around my T-zone and cheeks but super dry under my eyes and forehead.  This mean my face is a powder nightmare.  Many powder foundations and translucent powders look cakey and get stuck on dry patches.  So after powder application, my face is splotchy and looks like a snake molting its skin.  (NOT a good look.)  But after years of trial and error, I’ve found FIVE (yes five!) of the best translucent powders that are perfect for keeping the shine away and doesn’t get stuck on dry patches. Some of them are even drugstore ones!

The Five Best Translucent Powders

  1. Laura Mercier Translucent Powder
  2. Too Faced Primed and Poreless
  3. Tarte Smooth Operator Powder
  4. NYX HD translucent Powder
  5. Rimmel London Stay Matte Powder

Review of Laura Mercier Powder

Currently, my favorite is the Laura Mercier Translucent powder.  It’s loose formula is also PERFECT for baking and it gives your skin a subtle glow and who doesn’t love radiant looking skin?  This powder blends beautifully in to the skin and just looks you’re glowing from the inside out. With this powder, I know my makeup looks flawless and stays flawless for most of the day which is a huge achievement.  Without this powder, my foundation tends to break up around my nose and t-zone areas. And when I go to re-powder my face with other powders, it gets cakey and gross looking.  I can honestly say that Laura Mercier is a life-saver and totally worth they hype!

Primer from Studio Gear l First Impressions

Primer Studio Gear Skin Objective Face Perfecting

Acne. Hyper-pigmentation. Redness. I have it all.  So I love trying out new products that have “skin perfecting” features.  The Studio Gear Prime Objective Skin Perfecting Face Primer definitely fit this description.

This primer is very similar to Smashbox Photofinish.  Both products have a gel-like texture, no scent, and blends beautifully in to the skin.  My skin feels noticeably softer and smoother after applying this product.  I’ve been using the Rimmel London Wake Me Up foundation and this foundation is quite dewey on my combination skin, but this primer really helps this foundation stay on my face and not break-up throughout the day.  Trust me, patchy looking cake-face is never going to be a trend.  With foundation, you want your skin to look even toned and smooth.

Plus, whenever I apply this product on my face, my concealer stays put.  It does not crease or get patchy throughout the day.  I mean seriously, it is stuck like glue and that is one thing I’ll be happy to have stuck on me.  Because the gum stuck on the bottom of my new shoes does not make me happy and it also NEVER comes out.  You’ll always have that small little patch that you couldn’t pick off.  Anyway…let’s get back to the primer shall we?

So, I love how this product keeps my face looking fresh longer without having to apply ridiculous amounts of setting power throughout the day.  Plus with setting powder, you’ll easily become cake face by the time 5 O’clock rolls around.  Not to mention, who has time for touch-ups anyway?  Even with dewey foundations, I know I won’t look like an oil slick if I applied my prime objective primer that morning.

The Prime Objective also doesn’t break me out.  During that special time of the month, my skin had huge breakouts and this primer layered beautifully under my concealer.  My breakouts healed relatively fast and I don’t know if it was the new toner I tried or this new primer but I’m not changing anything in my skin routine.  If it isn’t broken, why fix it?

Get a Smokey eye and Full Lashes with Studio Gear Cosmetics l First Impressions

Smokey Eye and Full lashes with Studio Gear Gel cream eye color

Anything that claims to be invincible or give me full lashes is a must-try product in my book.  Let’s be real, I’m Asian.  I’m stuck with short and straight lashes. So, I really could use any help I can get.  For this smokey eye look, I’ll be featuring my first impressions of the Studio gear eye color and mascara.

Invincible Gel Cream Eye Color

First, let’s start with the invincible gel cream eye color.  The color is invincible earth.  This stuff is super pigmented and has the same texture as the Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade.  So, I actually used this eye color on my brows and found that it was pretty easy to blend out.

**TIP: If you’re using this cream as your brow pencil, a little bit goes a long way.

After I filled in my sparse brows with the gel cream, I also used the invincible brush and applied the eye color over my top and bottom lash line to give my eyes some definition.  I love that the dark brown color is cool-toned so it can work as liner, brow color, and shadow. And any type of multi-use makeup is my best friend (especially for traveling!!!).

For my shadow, I layered this eye color on the outer corners to create a smokey eye look.  Over eye shadow, I found that the eye color is a little hard to blend.  But with a dense eye shadow brush, I eventually blended it out and my smokey eye look stayed all day!  I have pretty oily eyelids so any makeup that lasts all day with no creasing is a WIN in my book.

ImpactFULL Pro TLS Mascara

To finish off my eye look, I used the IMPACTFULL PRO TLS Mascara. The mascara formula is quite wet and separates your lashes quite well.  I applied three coats of mascara and it didn’t clump up my lashes.  The large mascara brush is great for separating lashes and giving you a fuller look.

After a full day of wear, I found that my brows still looked awesome and my top lash line still looked fabulous. However, my bottom lash line smudged a tiny bit but it wasn’t too bad. Even after a full eight hours of wear, the mascara didn’t smudge a bit!  It’s awesome.

For a long-wearing eye look, I would definitely recommend Studio Gear‘s new Invincible Earth gel cream eye color and IMPACTFULL mascara.  If you want try these products out, you can get 10% off with discount code: “SGEYES”

First Impressions: Missha Magic Cushion + PMEL Essence Eyeliner

Missha Magic Cushion Review

Oh my gosh!  I’m so excited to share this product with you guys!  This is my first cushion foundation and guys…I’m in LOVE!  Missha has been a beauty brand that I’ve been super excited to try since I saw Bubz from Bubzbeauty rave about Missha’s BB cream a few years ago.  And I’m happy to say that Missha did not let me down.

Missha Magic Cushion

The Missha Magic Cushion gives my skin a radiant glow with a dewey finish.  The foundation makes skin look healthy and even toned without being cakey.  The magic cushion had a light to medium coverage and never feels heavy on the skin.  Plus, it’s perfect for the summer because it comes with SPF 50!!!  Protect your skin while making it glow!  What could be better?

Plus, the finish of this foundation is great for dry to normal skin.  But if you’re combination or oily, I would recommend getting a translucent powder especially for that t-zone area.  And to make sure this product lasts all day, use a primer and you’ll be set.

I use the Too Face Primed and Poreless primer and my foundation lasts all day!  The magic cushion has never broke me out and it doesn’t break up throughout the day.  Honestly, I think I found my favorite foundation.

The Missha magic cushion comes in four colors.   I have colors: 21 and 23.  One is tanner for my bronze summer skin.  And the other is lighter to match my winter skin tone.

PMEL Essence Eyeliner Review

In addition to having flawless skin, you’re going to need brighten up those under eyes for a truly radiant look.  And I think I found the perfect one.

Seriously, guys this is a major score!  If you’re looking for a natural looking under-eye highlighter then this eyeliner is perfect!  It’s slightly pink-toned and gives you a natural glow.  Plus, it makes your eyes look more bright and awake.

This is the perfect eyeliner for creating that cute No-makeup makeup look that Koreans have perfected!  For an easier to find alternative: I also like the NYX jumbo eye pencil in yogurt.  The NYX one is a bit shiner but you can blend it out for a more natural look.

Best Summer Makeup Routine for Acne-prone Skin + The Best Way to Conceal Blemishes

summer makeup routine for acne prone skin and how to cover blemishes

The heat index in RVA has been breaking a 100 degrees fahrenheit every, single, day this whole week.  So, my normal winter foundation routine is just not cutting it.  In the winter, I loved using my PUR cosmetics hydra-fluid foundation.  This stuff is amazing for dry skin and never leaves me looking patchy.  But in the summer, this finish is just too dewey.  Summer makeup, for me, supposed to look natural and light, while also being sweat-proof. So, here’s the best summer makeup routine for acne-prone skin.

The Basics: Summer Makeup Routine

The first step to any summer makeup routine or any makeup routine for that matter is moisturize.  Prep your face for makeup.  And since the sun is blazing, remember to put on sunscreen!  Prevention is key for radiant skin.

The second step (another super important one) is primer. You HAVE to have primer.  Seriously, it’s summer.  It’s hot and you’re going to sweat, so your makeup will start moving within the hour.  Trust me, your perfect highlight and contour will soon be a muddled mess.  To prevent that from happening use a primer.  A good primer will keep your skin looking flawless and lock in all your hard work.

The third step requires a little skill.  Don’t worry, it’s just a little.  For the summer, you want a more natural look since cakey makeup would slip and slide too much in the heat.  However, if you have a breakout, a natural foundation generally has less coverage too.  So, keep reading to find out my secrets on concealing a zit.

Best Way to Conceal a Zit

When you have a breakout, it’s super easy to just cake on concealer to cover it up, but that actually makes the breakout even more noticeable.  The best way to conceal a zit is to treat it then cover it.  I apply tea tree oil to all my problem areas, then I go in with a light moisturizer.  Once my face is nice and hydrated, I apply a good primer to blur out my pores.  After my primer, I start dotting concealer over my problem areas.  Once those are covered, I take a CLEAN and dampened beauty blender to blend the concealer in to my skin.

After my concealer is blended in, I take my dampened beauty blender and blot it over my compact foundation.  I’m currently using the Hello Oxygen Compact and it does a fabulous job of evening out my skin and decreasing redness.  PLUS, this stuff sticks!  My foundation was still on even after three hours of pokemon hunting.  If you play Pokemon GO, then you now this foundation is seriously AMAZING!

My Summer Makeup Routine + Products Used

To help treat and prevent more acne, I’m using my favorite Almay concealer with salicylic acid.  I take the concealer and dot the center of my face, sides of my nose, and over any blemishes.  Once my face is covered in little dots, I take a damp beauty blender to blend it in.  After I’m done, I seal in my handy-work with my Hello Oxygen Compact.  This combination feels light on the skin and leaves you with a matte finish that lasts all day.  Plus, the compact has SPF!  WIN!!!

I finish off this foundation routine with Benefit’s WATTS UP highlighter on the bridge of my nose and under the eyes for a natural glow.  And if you have thin or non-existent eyebrows, I definitely recommend using the Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade.  This stuff lasts all day and a little really does go a long way.  I grab a little product on my brush and line the bottom of my brow.  And using the little spool side, I brush out the product.  This technique gives a nice natural looking, full brow that lasts all day (which is key because when I’m out and about in the summer I don’t want to worry about touch ups). Finish the look off with a little mascara and you’ll have the perfect natural makeup look that won’t break you out!
