The Two Best Products for Acne Scarring + Bonus Reviews

Acne Scarring products

I started breaking out when I was 13.  My cystic acne has left my skin with hyper-pigmentation and pretty severe scarring.  Recently, I’ve started using Kate Somerville D-Scar Serum and Exuviance Evening Restorative Complex to help combat my uneven skin tone.

I’ve had pretty severe breakouts since November.  I had clusters of huge painful cysts around my chin and jawline.  So, I couldn’t give these two products a try.  But now that my skin is slowly healing.  It’s time to break these babies out.

Let’s start with why I chose these two products.  The Exuviance cream has anti-aging properties to help with skin suppleness and elasticity.  Plus, the name of the cream is Evening RESTORative complex.  After that many breakouts, my skin definitely needs any help it can get.  The cream has a light floral scent and comes packed with Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and an array of botanicals to repair damaged sin and prevent wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid restores moisture in to my skin.  This is very necessary since I used 10% sulfur solutions and benzoyl peroxide to treat my blemishes.  Both these acne treatments are effective but also very drying.  But now that my skin is healing, Vitamin A, C, and E actually helps with cell restoration, so my skin can heal faster.  Plus, dermatologists have found that these vitamins also leave your skin brighter and more even toned.

Now, I know what you’re thinking anti-aging products at 23??? Well, here’s a secret.  You’re never too young to start combating aging skin.  We’re constantly being exposed to sunlight and who can really say they get their full 8 hours every night?  Excess sunlight and lack of sleep can make you age way faster than you’re willing to admit.  And with aging skin, prevention is key.  Another reason why I love using anti-aging products is because the formula dermatologists put in to serums and creams to fill in wrinkles can actually fill in the pock marks and scarring on your skin too.

I apply the Exuviance Evening Restorative Complex every night and every morning, I use the Kate Somerville D-Scar Serum.  The reason why I chose the Kate Somerville D-Scar Serum to treat my hyper-pigmentation and acne scarring is because the serum is applied with a roller ball which can help stimulate cell regeneration as you rub it over the scarred tissue.  Plus, the cooling roller ball makes sure that the product is absorbed quickly in to the skin.

After 4 weeks of using these two products, I have found that my skin texture is softer and smoother.  There isn’t a huge difference in my acne scarring and hyper-pigmentation yet but I can definitely see a reduction in redness and the depth of the scar.  When you’re an acne sufferer, I promise that any little bit helps.  With these two products, I’m becoming more and more comfortable with going out bare-faced.

If you have any products you use to treat acne scarring and hyper-pigmentation, then leave it down below!  I’m always up to try new products!

Dry Hair is No Longer A Problem!

Hask Superfruit Healthy Hair Shampoo fights dry hair

After a summer of pool days, beach vacations, and long days in the sun, dry hair is inevitable. And with sweater weather in full force, my hair is getting staticky. It sticks to my face, stands up at the ends, and looks dull at the roots and mid shaft. I tried so many things to get rid of dull hair, dry hair, and brittle hair.  But nothing worked.  I spent hours on google and Pinterest looking at various homemade hair masks.

Over the passed three months, I’ve used Argan oil, coconut oil, and treatment masks. But nothing can combat my dry hair.  Instead these oils just leave my dry scalp and dry hair, greasy at the ends with a less than impressive shine. But when I tried Superfruit’s healthy hair shampoo and conditioner, I saw instant results. After washing with the healthy hair duo, I let my hair air dry and it was noticeable softer and had a healthy shine to it. Plus, the shampoo smells amazing. The scent reminds me of cranberries which makes it perfect for this time of year!

I would definitely recommend this product to any one with dry  hair or dull toned hair. If you have oily hair then this product will definitely give your hair a healthy shine. however with oily hair be careful of day 2 hair, your hair can get greasy at the roots with this healthy hair duo. To prevent that, just spray some dry shampoo in to your hair the night before and in the morning. Your hair will maintain its style and it’ll look and smell clean. Plus, the hair brush has various sized bristles so it’ll detangle your hair without pulling it.

What really makes this shampoo and conditioner fabulous are the ingredients. It’s made from Acai berries which give it a great cranberry scent. Plus the duo has mangosteen oil to give moisture and shine to your hair. The shampoo and conditioner contains no sulfates or Parabens.

Whats your favorite shampoo?

The Perfect Skin Routine for Acne Prone Skin + My Skin Story

Skin routine for acne-prone skin Valentia moisturizerWhat’s up everybody! I’m back with a “new” skin routine.  I’ve made some minor changes and wanted to share some of my favorite products with you.

The Breakdown: My Perfect Skin routine

Wash face TWICE a day with deep cleaning cleanser

Morning: apply tea tree oil all over face, concentrating on areas with blemishes

Night: apply Benzoyl peroxide spot treatment all over face

Apply moisturizer

FINISHED!

Before we get in to all the details of my skin routine, let’s dive in to my skin story.

My Skin Story

I’ve been battling against cystic acne since I was in 7th grade.  It actually hurt to wash my face and instead of being gentle with my skin.  I dried it out.  I applied the clean and clear spot treatments three times a day and my skin started flaking.  But my acne looked less inflamed so I continued with the treatment.  Applying moisturizer to my skin back in those days actually hurt.  It actually burned because my skin was so dry.  A few more weeks passed and the acne got worse.  The pimples were larger and even more inflamed.  So, I just stopped doing anything.  I stopped using the cream and just gave up.  My confidence was shot and I avoided mirrors as much as possible.

When I was in high school, my mom finally took me to a dermatologist and after a few appointments and follow-ups we found what worked for my skin.  It was low percentages of benzoyl peroxide and sulfur.  My skin cleared up.  It’s not permanently clear but I don’t break out as much anymore.  I get the occasional large zit here and there but only during certain times of the month.

Here’s how I keep my skin relatively clear.

My Skincare Routine

For me, the perfect skin routine starts with the Biore Charcoal cleanser every morning and night. Simplicity is key for me.  As much as I want to start one of those 10 step skin care routines, I know I’m too lazy to actually keep up with those.  My perfect skincare routine must be simple or I won’t do it.  When I’m finishing up homework at midnight and waking up at 5AM, I’m not going to go through the ten steps necessary for my perfect skin routine.

After washing my face, I take a few drops of tea tree oil in to my palm and apply it directly to my face.  Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial properties to prevent acne.  After applying the oil to my skin, I put on my Valentia Brightening Moisturizer.  This moisturizer keeps my face hydrated and gives it a healthy glow.  The scent is very fresh and the product absorbs quickly in to the skin.  I love it.

If I’m not working or filming a video, this is the end of the my skincare routine.  For work or filming days, I apply my Too Faced Primed and Poreless Primer or Smashbox Photofinish primer before applying foundation.  Lately, I’ve been loving the natural look so I’m using  the Missha Magic Cushion Foundation or the Bourjois healthy mix serum foundation.  These foundations even out your skin without making you look cakey.  The coverage is light to medium and gives your skin a natural dewey look.

At night, I use the Soap and Glory cleansing milk to wash off my makeup.  If I don’t have makeup on then I just go straight to my Biore Charcoal cleanser. After washing my face, I apply the Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne treatment all over my face then apply the Valentia Moisturizer. I like this spot treatment because there is only 5% benzoyl peroxide so it doesn’t dry out my skin. For especially large zits, I dab a little EradiKATE sulfur treatment over it with a clean Q-tip.

When I need a quick pick-me-up or when I have multiple breakouts, I use the Dr. Jart Clearing solution sheet mask or GlamGlow supermud clearing treatment to help calm my skin.  I generally do this once a month to keep my skin smooth and clear.  Plus, these masks treat the hyper-pigmentation left by the acne.

And that’s it.  My face has stayed relatively clear for over 6 months now.  If your skin gets dry from the cleanser, use the Soap and Glory cleansing milk for night and day.  This cleansers cleans your skin without stripping it.

My perfect skin routine may not work for your skin type, so adjust to fit yours.  And remember the perfect skin routine has to include a good cleanser and moisturizer.  These two powerful pieces will clear out clogged pores and keep your skin hydrated!

Best Summer Makeup Routine for Acne-prone Skin + The Best Way to Conceal Blemishes

summer makeup routine for acne prone skin and how to cover blemishes

The heat index in RVA has been breaking a 100 degrees fahrenheit every, single, day this whole week.  So, my normal winter foundation routine is just not cutting it.  In the winter, I loved using my PUR cosmetics hydra-fluid foundation.  This stuff is amazing for dry skin and never leaves me looking patchy.  But in the summer, this finish is just too dewey.  Summer makeup, for me, supposed to look natural and light, while also being sweat-proof. So, here’s the best summer makeup routine for acne-prone skin.

The Basics: Summer Makeup Routine

The first step to any summer makeup routine or any makeup routine for that matter is moisturize.  Prep your face for makeup.  And since the sun is blazing, remember to put on sunscreen!  Prevention is key for radiant skin.

The second step (another super important one) is primer. You HAVE to have primer.  Seriously, it’s summer.  It’s hot and you’re going to sweat, so your makeup will start moving within the hour.  Trust me, your perfect highlight and contour will soon be a muddled mess.  To prevent that from happening use a primer.  A good primer will keep your skin looking flawless and lock in all your hard work.

The third step requires a little skill.  Don’t worry, it’s just a little.  For the summer, you want a more natural look since cakey makeup would slip and slide too much in the heat.  However, if you have a breakout, a natural foundation generally has less coverage too.  So, keep reading to find out my secrets on concealing a zit.

Best Way to Conceal a Zit

When you have a breakout, it’s super easy to just cake on concealer to cover it up, but that actually makes the breakout even more noticeable.  The best way to conceal a zit is to treat it then cover it.  I apply tea tree oil to all my problem areas, then I go in with a light moisturizer.  Once my face is nice and hydrated, I apply a good primer to blur out my pores.  After my primer, I start dotting concealer over my problem areas.  Once those are covered, I take a CLEAN and dampened beauty blender to blend the concealer in to my skin.

After my concealer is blended in, I take my dampened beauty blender and blot it over my compact foundation.  I’m currently using the Hello Oxygen Compact and it does a fabulous job of evening out my skin and decreasing redness.  PLUS, this stuff sticks!  My foundation was still on even after three hours of pokemon hunting.  If you play Pokemon GO, then you now this foundation is seriously AMAZING!

My Summer Makeup Routine + Products Used

To help treat and prevent more acne, I’m using my favorite Almay concealer with salicylic acid.  I take the concealer and dot the center of my face, sides of my nose, and over any blemishes.  Once my face is covered in little dots, I take a damp beauty blender to blend it in.  After I’m done, I seal in my handy-work with my Hello Oxygen Compact.  This combination feels light on the skin and leaves you with a matte finish that lasts all day.  Plus, the compact has SPF!  WIN!!!

I finish off this foundation routine with Benefit’s WATTS UP highlighter on the bridge of my nose and under the eyes for a natural glow.  And if you have thin or non-existent eyebrows, I definitely recommend using the Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade.  This stuff lasts all day and a little really does go a long way.  I grab a little product on my brush and line the bottom of my brow.  And using the little spool side, I brush out the product.  This technique gives a nice natural looking, full brow that lasts all day (which is key because when I’m out and about in the summer I don’t want to worry about touch ups). Finish the look off with a little mascara and you’ll have the perfect natural makeup look that won’t break you out!

Where are YOUR beauty products made? (Drugstore Edition)

Have you ever wondered where your makeup was made?  Well, I’m here to tell you that the world is literally at your finger-tips when you do your makeup in the morning.  Check it out!

One of my favorite drugstore brands is NYX, there lip products are ahhhmazing!  The NYX soft matte lip creams are worth every rave and compliment!  All of NYX products are made in Taiwan.

Rimmel London has great foundations that don’t break me out!  I love the Rimmel London Wake me Up foundation and concealers.  The Rimmel London matte foundation is also great for people with oily skin!  The Kate Moss lipsticks have great pigmentation and feel soft on the lips.  Rimmel London products are usually made in England with some products made in Monaco.

Revlon has some great foundations and lipsticks.  There are beauty gurus that swear by their photo-ready foundation.  Plus, the Revlon super lustrous lipsticks feel super soft on the lips.  Many Revlon lip products are made in the US.  Some Revlon foundations, concealers, and powders are made in China.

Where beauty products are made 1

ELF (eyes lip face) is one of the most popular drugstore brands.  ELF is known for its unbeatable prices with makeup brushes starting at only $1 and powders for only $3!  For makeup beginners, ELF brushes are a great start.  I’ve had my ELF eyeshadow brushes for almost 2 years and they have still held up after monthly washes.  All ELF products are manufactured in China.

Simple products are perfect for people with sensitive skin.  I looooove their moisturizers and cleansing micellar water.  Their moisturizer never breaks me out and keeps my skin hydrated.  Plus, their micellar water removes all of my eye makeup without irritating my eyes.  Simple products are made in the USA.

Neutrogena has great skincare and makeup items.  When I first started wearing foundation, I loved to use the Neutrogena Healthy skin foundation.  The light foundation gives me a dewey finish and is super easy to blend out because of its watery consistency.  When I started breaking out, I used the Neutrogena skin clearing foundation.  The salicylic acid in the foundation kept my breakouts at bay.  Plus, Neutrogena’s grapefruit scrub is one of my favorites.  I love the fruity scent and I especially love how soft my skin feels after using it.  And we can’t forget about Neutrogena’s ahhhmazing makeup cleansing wipes and their fabulous sheer dry sunscreen.  Neutrogena products are made in the following countries: Germany, USA, and the UK.

Bourjois is one of my favorite UK brands.  When I went to Canada, I knew I had to stock up on some of these fabulous products.  I love the Bourjois healthy mix serum foundation.  The serum tones and brightens my skin while the foundation covers and blurs imperfections.  Bourjois products are made in France.

Covergirl is one of those trusted makeup brands that everyone has in their collection.  I remember buying my first bottle of foundation when I was in Middle School Personally, I love their mascaras.  The Supersizer mascara adds both volume and length to my short lashes.  Another great mascara for people with straight lashes is their Bombshell Curvacious mascara.  And the IntesifyMe eyeliner gives me the perfect cat-eye every time!  Covergirl foundation, powders, and eyeshadow are made in the USA.  Their eyeliners and mascara are mostly made in Germany.

Who hasn’t seen a Maybelline commercial?  Maybe she’s born with it…maybe it’s…. Who couldn’t finish that sentence?  Maybelline has great products.  I love their Babylips lip balms and their FitMe concealers and foundations.  Tati from GlamLifeGuru raves about the FitME concealers all the time.  And of course, YouTube made me buy it.   They also have a rocket mascara that I have been wanting to try for ages!  I’ve seen Claire mentioning the mascara as one of her favorites.  All in all, if YouTube says its good, then I’m buying it.  Maybelline products are made in the USA.

Pacifica Beauty is not mentioned often but I’ve recently discovered this brand and fell in love!  Their makeup wipes are amazing and they smell like summer with a delicious coconut scent.  The wipes are gentle and remove all of my waterproof liner and mascara.  I use their eyeshadow palettes every. single. morning.  And I even featured their products in a video!

Almay  is one of those go-to brands I always reach for.  I needed makeup for prom and what did I grab in CVS?  Almay blush, lipstick, and concealer.  What I love about Almay is that there is always a coupon and you know me, I love a good deal.  Currently, I’m using the Almay lash care eye makeup remover.  I love that this eye makeup remover takes off my mascara without rubbing off my lashes.  I actually stopped wearing mascara for a few months for this very reason.  I kept losing lashes whenever I took my mascara off.  But now, it’s no longer a problem!  Almay foundations, concealers, and mascaras are made in the USA.  Their eyeliners are made in Germany like many other drugstore eyeliners.  Almay’s newest smart shade powder blush is made in China.
