3 Reasons Why Tea Tree Oil is AMAZING for Your Skin

My cousin (who loves all things organic and natural) introduced me to tea tree oil when I was in middle school.  I started getting zits and blackheads when I was in 6th grade.  She suggested that I use this Chinese herbal serum infused with tea tree oil.  The serum smelled gross to my Middle School self.  It smelled like the gross herbal supplements my mom always made me drink because “it’s good for me.”  I still wonder how something that tastes that bitter can actually be good for me because all I want to do is gag while I chug the hot herbal tea.

But that’s not what we’re here to discuss.  Let me give you 5 good reasons to why YOU should add tea tree oil to your daily routine.

1. It calms and soothes your skin.
Let’s be real.  We put a whole lot of crap on to our skin (like makeup) and sometimes even food gets on there or that drop of toothpaste that drips out of your mouth as you brush your teeth.  Or when you go outside for long periods of time that much sun can damage your skin and expose it to all the pollution that is floating in the air.  All of that can irritate your skin on a daily basis.  So, why not treat your skin with care and pamper it a little.
Tea tree calms your skin much like green tea.  It also cools your skin, reducing any type of redness on your face.  Once the tea tree oil is absorbed, your skin feels instantly smoother and softer.  Your skin will look like its glowing from within!  And who wouldn’t want that?

2. It reduces acne.
Everybody has experienced the dreaded zit on their face.  We all know that it’s not pleasant.  That little red dot is sore and painful and makes us feel like EVERYONE we meet is ONLY looking at the zit and not us.  Regular use of tea tree oil can help fight and prevent acne.  The anti-bacterial properties in tea tree oil kills acne-causing bacteria, leaving your pores clean and your skin blemish-free.

3. It gently exfoliates your skin.
Exfoliating can be painful sometimes with those rough grains and micro-beads, irritating your skin even more.  But tea tree oil, naturally exfoliates the skin without any beads or sugar.  Tea tree oil gently removes dead skin as you massage the oil or serum on to your face.  This gently process is great for people with sensitive skin!

The BEST Powder Foundation EVER!

I used to swear by Physicians Formula Translucent powder foundation.  But now, I can’t get enough of the Benefit Hello Flawless Powder Foundation.  In June, I mixed my Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation with my Instanatural Vitamin C Moisturizer to create a light, dewey tinted moisturizer.  I loved how natural and healthy my complexion looked with this combo, but after four to six hours of wear, my face looked like an oil slick.  This combo was just too moisturizing for these hot summer months.  So, I decided to take out my Benefit Powder Foundation and try it out.

After applying my Smashbox Photofinish Primer, I applied the Benefit foundation with my foundation brush from Real Techniques.  At first, I thought my face looked really dry because I was so used to having that healthy skin glow.  But after 20 minutes, the Benefit foundation melted in to my skin.   I couldn’t believe how well the powder blended in to my skin.  This powder is super light and great for those light makeup days.  Personally, I don’t like to pile on foundation in the summer heat.  So, this powder foundation was airy and perfect!

This powder foundation does not cake up because the powder is really fine.  The fine consistency helps the foundation to blend easily in to the skin.  I usually have dry patches around my chin and eye area, but this powder foundation goes over those spots really well and never makes my skin look flakey.  This sheer coverage powder is amazing for evening out my skin and giving it a nice even tone.  The foundation never feels heavy on my skin and lasts all day!  I can go to work from 10AM to 7:30PM and my foundation will still look presentable!  Benefit’s Hello Flawless Powder Foundation is definitely going to be my go-to foundation for everyday wear!

I’m in the color “Never Settle Petal.”

For color references, I use:

  • Natural 4 in Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation
  • Light/Medium in Physician Formula foundations
  • Medium 1 Custard in NARS Radiant creamy concealer
  • Light-Medium Sand in TARTE Amazonian Clay Foundation
  • Soft Beige in Rimmel London Wake My Up Foundation
  • Light Beige in Burjois Healthy Mix Foundation

How to Clear Away Blackheads/ Clogged Pores in 10 Minutes

Blackheads and clogged pores are the hardest things to get rid of EVER!  My nose and t-zone are the worst because of the excess oil.  I try to use pore strips once a week, but sometimes the weeks just goes by so fast that I completely forget to use a pore strip.  Then, the next week my nose feels all bumpy and gross from the blackheads.  So, here is my solution for getting rid of blackheads and unclogging those pores in 10 minutes.

The first step (AKA the most important) is to wash your face with your desired cleanser.  Remember to use warm water because the heat will open up your pores and make it easier to extract all the dirt, grime, and blackheads out.

Now, for the second step, you’ll need a good detox scrub/ clay mask.  I like using either the Soap and Glory Put Your Nose In It detox scrub or the Eclos Clay mask to really open up the pores and prep them for my pore strip.

After washing off the scrub or mask, I like to pop on a pore strip from Biore.  I love to order these strips from Sasa.com because they are so much cheaper there!  I can get a box of 10 strips for only $4 US dollars.  I leave the strip on for about three minutes (or just when the strip is dry).  When the strip comes off, the strip will be covered in little blackheads.  (Yeah, it’s as gross as it sounds.)  But my nose feels so smooth after!

When I’m done with the strip, I wash off all the left over residue and apply my Murad Clarifying toner all over my face.  Then, I use my favorite serum and finish off with a great moisturizer.  My skincare products absorb in to my skin better, now that it is cleaner and not clogged with dirt.  And I just love how cool and clean my face feels after this routine.

I do this routine about once a week, sometimes once every two weeks.  If you do this routine more than once a week, you may dry out or irritate your skin.  I am by no means a dermatologist, but I’m just sharing what works for me.

Top 5 UK Drugstore Makeup Products

Amazon and Asos are my favorite stores to buy UK Drugstore products.  After seeing Zoe from Zoella and Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter rave about the Rimmel London Wake Me Up Foundation and Concealer, I knew I had to try it.  So, I went on to Amazon.com and bought the concealer.  I was so excited for the concealer to arrive.  And when I opened the package, I knew it.  I bought the wrong color.  I bought the medium color and it was way too dark.  Now, I use that concealer as a contour shade around my nose, temples, and jawline.  Before going to Canada, I started making a list of drugstore products I needed to get my hands on.   Lucky enough, I found all of them at the drugstore near my hotel room.  I spent over $60 US dollars at that drugstore. But it was totally worth it.

For foundation and concealer color references:

  • I am in the color Natural 4 for Bobbi Brown’s Skin foundation.
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation Light Medium Sand
  • NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer Medium Custard
  • Light/Medium in most BB and CC creams

1. Rimmel London Wake me Up Foundation and Concealer
In Canada, I bought the Rimmel London Wake Me Foundation and Concealer in soft beige and very fair.  I wanted the concealer to be quite light because I like to use my concealer to brighten up the eyes and as a subtle highlighter on my cheeks and the bridge of my nose.  The Rimmel London foundation never looks cakey and feels really light on the skin.  I love how easy this foundation blends too!  It’s a great light to medium coverage foundation.

2. Rimmel London Kate Moss Matte and Satin lipstick
I love the Rimmel London Kate Moss lipsticks.  They have a great formula that is super smooth and soft.  There lipsticks are also quite hydrating with great color payoff.  I would have bought the Kate Moss lipsticks in RVA, but no matter which drugstore I go to, they are always sold out.  When I walked in to the drugstore in Montreal, I was in makeup heaven.  They had every color in the line and I had a blast testing out the colors.  Can you believe they actually let you try out the colors.  You never find that in drugstores here.
I have the Matte lipsticks in 107 (a deep burgundy color) and 101 (a bright pink color).

3. Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation and Concealer
For a light foundation, I highly recommend getting the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation.  The Serum in this foundation does make it dry really quick, so work quickly.  Don’t take your time dabbing on the foundation and waiting to blend.
I never had a problem with this foundation breaking up on me or getting cakey.  This foundation also gives the skin a nice glow, similar to the Rimmel London Wake Me Up foundation.  My skin never feels stripped or dry when I remove my foundation at the end of the day.  This serum doesn’t dry out my skin or cause breakouts.  I honestly feel like the serum in this foundation is actually healing my skin, leaving it more even-toned and more radiant.  I bought this foundation and concealer in light beige and apricot.

4. Soap and Glory Scrub Your Nose In It Detox Scrub
The clogged pores around my t-zone are the hardest things to get rid of.  I am super oily around my t-zone, so they are constantly getting clogged.  I love Biore pore strips but if I use that too often, my nose starts peeling.  The Soap and Glory Detox Scrub leaves my skin feeling clean.  When I apply the scrub to my nose, my face starts feeling tingly.  After scrubbing for two minutes, my pores are clean and my skin feels cool.  I love it!
Sometimes, when my nose feels super clogged, I scrub my nose with the detox scrub to loosen up the pores.  Then, I apply a pore strip after I wash off the scrub.  This two step system really cleans out my pores.  To prevent my newly cleans pores from clogging up again, I quickly apply a toner and serum all over my face.

5. Soap and Glory Peaches and Clean Cleanser
When I ran out of makeup wipes, I sighed and took a look at my stash of cleansers.  The Soap and Glory Peaches and Clean Cleanser caught my eye. I remember Tati from YouTube recommending this cleanser for makeup removal.  So, I grabbed the bottle and tried it out.  I fell in love.  This cleanser smells like Peaches and Cream and instantly dissolves my makeup away, leaving my face feeling clean (and NOT stripped!).  After one use, I was in love!
